Default Master Cylinder Diaphragm

Should the Master Cylinder Diaphragm be recessed (flat) or elongated when replacing the reservoir cap? When I took it off to check the fluid level, the two rubber "circles" were fully elongated although the fluid level was fine. The shop manual says nothing. I believe the diaphragm serves as a fluid level compensator when the brakes are applied. I also believe the mechanics pushed the diaphragm flat when re-installing the cover on other cars I have owned, but I'm not positive. What is the correct position for the diaphragm? Also, is there any way short of buying a new cover to regain the original cad plate finish to the cover?

The diaphragm should be flat, Eastwood makes a cadmium spray other wise you will have to buy a new one.

Thanks! I assume all diaphragms are pulled down after use? Just need to be pushed back to flat position when reinstalling to prevent fluid spillage.
