If you are talking about original LT-1 (70-72) I have them on my car. They are fine, but much better heads out there if you are buying them, unless of course they are cheap. I think the originals only flow around 150 vs 190 up on aftermarkets.

I can buy 71 original Lt-1 heads that have been ported and polished for 400 bucks......with all new hardware....seems like a great deal and will definently liven up my 74 :D

If all you are doing is adding LT1 heads, I question how much of an improvement you will really see? The LT1 was a whole package: heads, cam, carb, intake, exhaust, etc. In addition, the problem I have with buying someone else's rebuilt heads is that I question who did the work, what exactly was done to them, and how good is the workmanship?

Since i haven't seen the heads, i can't really comment on whether it's a good deal or bad, but replacement lt1 heads are available new. They are about $350 each, bare. For that price, if aftermarket parts don't bother you, you're better of with a Dart or AFR head.

Very true ....I have already added everything else...exhaust , intake, Carb and I am also installing a hot cam as well......The heads are Perfect and are done correctly.....It should raise the the compression from 8.5:1 to around 10.5:1
The heads are very rare and I really think I will be happy with them...they are 041 numbered heads

will late model LT-1 aluminum heads fit or are there issues with manifold bolt holes and cooling passages?

:nono: Sorry Alwyn678 but 041 casting heads are not LT-1 heads and they're not rare. The 041s are 1969-70 only mid-performance small valve heads. LT-1 heads are either 186 or 492 castings with 2.02/1.60 valves & 64cc chambers. The 041s are 1.94/1.50 valve heads w/68cc chambers. Some people in the past have added the larger valves to the 041s but the head is still fundamentally different. Plus they use the large diameter spark plugs while the LT-1s use the small diameter plugs.

I have a silly question??? how would I know what type of heads I have, and be nice gentlemen, I am far from an engine expert, which is why I'm on the boards....to learn. :) I know when I had my car in the shop 2 years ago, they told me I had mismatched heads, whatever that means, but they also said they weren't stock. They said they were performance heads. If I were to assume that I have to take the valve covers off to find out, would I be correct or is there more to it?????

Warp 70 take your valve covers off and read the casting # and then go to http://www.mortec.com and read what you got.

Alwyn678,
The L-82 heads you currently have are basicly the LT1 heads, both are the big valve double hump head. Casting numbers are different but thay are very close to being one in the same. If you are wanting to get a true update, get a good aftermarket aluminum head.

will late model LT-1 aluminum heads fit or are there issues with manifold bolt holes and cooling passages?
mdsmith,
Nope. The late model LT1 is a different engine. Believe that the only major part that is interchangable with the Classic Chevy small block is the crankshaft.

tom...

Just to clarify, 1970 LT-1 heads have large diameter plugs. I'm not sure
but I think the '71-'72 heads lower the compression as well.

yes in 71 it had the 487 heads with 76 cc chambers... (~9:1 compression??)

and 72 had the 916 or 487 heads also featuring the 76 cc chambers ....
