I think several have done that. I changed mine to TBI. The ram air still fits and it looks like it still has a carb. I've seen several with the TPI setup.
Mine is from an 87 GMC van. My 73 didn't have an engine when I got it, so I took everything out of this van. I used the 350, 700r4, computer & wiring harness. You can get a kit for the GM TBI from one of the hot rod shops.
I swapped out the crossfire system for the Accel DFI system in my car about 3 years ago. Last year, I swapped out the DFI system for a sequential Speedpro/FAST system with wideband O2 sensor and individual cylinder control.
I thought handling the fuel aspect was more challenging than the electrical aspect of it.
I did a hotrod TPI setup on it, headers, heads, etc....custom chip from Breathless Performance....1227730 computer, MAP system....700r4 tranny in place of muncie...for the O/drive.....
DPFI is the way to go, l see little over a proper hotrodded, cammed up L98 that an LT1-4 can give....even an LS1 other than bragging rights....considering the cost and time/effort don't forget.....according to all that's written I should make about 350-375 hp, that's LS1 territory....
I'm currently running a TPIS mini-ram on my 420 SBC. It started out as a salvaged 350 TPI unit and harness from a 89 camero, before up grading to the mini-ram. I will say this is a very sweet running, smooth combination.
