Default engine won't start

After starting engine for the first time since receiving it from builder last night today will not start. I had to put a throttle spring on it and think I have it flooded. cause I smell a lot of gas after each attempt. how long should it take to clear out? I have waited 30-45 min between attempts and do not give fuel when first turnning over then give 2 pumps and try again but engine does not fire. any suggestions would like to get it to muffer shop today Thanks

PS how did temp gauge work on 78?

Try holding the pedal to the floor when starting. This is generally the method used to start a flooded engine. Don't pump it, however.

If you severely flooded it you may need to check the plugs.

Thanks Jud,

Have use that method before and that is the way we used to start flooded radial aircraft engines. haven't tried that yet partly because I broke the plastic clip that holds the throttle cable to peddle but will get wife to turn engine over and I will work throttle out side

You're welcome, and yes, I have done it that way. Quoting my '76 Vette owners manual regarding "Engine Flooded" the instructions are as follows: "Depress accelerator pedal and hold to floor while starting until engine is cleared of excess fuel and is running smoothly. Never pump the accelerator pedal". Hope this helps.

Does it crank but not start? Check your ignition system. Is the distributor installed correctly, Is the ground strap from the starter that atatches to the frame's connection clean and tight? The ground strap is the big thick wire running from the starter and attatches to the bottom of the frame. Is the ignition wire connected to the coil on the distributor? I'm sure others will throw possibilities your way.

I would pull the plugs and keep them out for a few hours at least, dry your plugs by hand and ckeck the oil for gas,you can wipe an engine out with gas in the oil, change oil if needed. Then retry starting normaly. good luck.
