I purchased a 76 with the hooker headered sidepipes and wanted to see what it sounded like without the baffels. I spent all day saturday trying and trying with no luck. I ould be cerious if there are any tricks.
this worked for me on my 74 with black hooker system. removed pinch bolt at front of side tube. drove small wedge in pinch point. soaked joint overnight. drove tube off with wood block by hitting rear tube mounting tab. each side came off with a few whacks. had car on my lift. could be tougher on the ground !
I coat both the header and the inside of the tube with Anti-seize. Never out in the rain, so they don't rust too bad. Now I've go Jet-Hot coated headers and they really come apart easily- still using the Anti-seize too.
Soak the joint with your favorite penetrating oil and let it set.
After you've let it soak really well with the penetrants and lubes and spread the pinch point apart, get a large Zip-Lok bag full of ice and lay it over the connection point for a while. Cold makes metal shrink, and you will get just a little bit extra wiggle room. Whatever you do, don't heat it!
