Default Hammer sound from clutch
Hello -

71 454: WHen I release the clutch in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear, I get an awful hammering sound. Clutch? or transmission? 4th gear is ok.

In neutral at low and high rpm, no noise, so I can rule out the engine.

It might just be the pressure plate dropping the clutch on the flywheel. Mine makes a smacking noise, though I wouldn't call it an awful hammering noise.

The wifes BMW had that. The pressure plate mating surface broke away from the pressure plate surround support. Thats a loud bang, it actually still worked. Man, she must drive hard.
