well ive own my 99 frc for about 6 months now and before that a 00 ta so i know the ls1 world rather well recently me and my brother got a 76 stingray and were looking to redo and mod slightly nothing crzy looking for 400hp maybe, how hard would that be to achieve on a low budget? thanks
400 street friendly HP is relatively easy with a 383/396" stroker. Your 1976's base engine will need a lot of help and money to make a dependable 400HP. It is a low compression (8.2:1 smog motor with cast internals).
got all of my stuff listed below for around 2700 roughly....that's from the stroker bottom end to heads/cam/intake/waterpump/oilpump/etc...new stall converter......everything but the rocker arms went.......(already had holley 750)
heads were right under 1K and i got the scat stroker package from northern autoparts for 540 (pistons, crank, rods, bearing, rings)
if you go stroker or not, i think everyone will agree.... if you wanna make some more power you'll need some new heads and bump the compression up!
The Holley Systemax II kit will get you 400HP for $1700 (plus a new carb). If your '76 is an L82 then you have 4 bolt mains and flat top pistons and should hold that power easily. On the other hand, if it's an L48, you should have several months to save for the stroker kit before the bottom end pukes.

Careful here. The Holley Systemax HP claims come with a few caveats. You need to have flat-top pistons and a zero deck, neither of which an L-48 has. Even the L-82, unless it has been decked will have the standard deck height of 9.025 (roughly).
I don't think you will be happy if you put that system on an L-48 with standard deck height, std head gasket and dished pistons. It's not what the package was designed for.
what exactly makes these motors so restrictive? one way or another the motors looking like it going to be a scat 383 with vortec heads still not sure on the cam yet.
