Default Hood Adjustment

Whats the best way to adjust the hood catches? I get one right but the other gives me fits. Someone must have a foolproof way of doing it

Lift your hood, and lay a patch of Duct tape over the hood latch hole where the cone goes through. Do one side at a time. Once you have the tape over it, lower the hood gently so the cone touches the tape. Then lift it back up and see where in the opening the indent is.

If it's not centered, loosen the latch on the firewall, and move it slightly in the directions needed to center the cone in the hood latch.

Once you have the one side, don't change anything else, and move to the other side. Do the same thing so BOTH cones are centered in the hood latches.

Then you can adjust for height if you need to by raising and lowering the bump stops, or threading the cones in and out to raise and lower them.

do as db recommends. but also check the cable adjustment that connects the right and left sides for full retraction of the pass side catch. there's a small plate with staggered holes that is attached to the cable. make sure the clip that holds the cable at the center of the hood is metal, not plastic-if that clip breaks there will not be any tension on the cable.

Thanks guys. I only know this stuff because I had to do it all on mine. I have a '77, which actually is the later style of latches. They are on the firewall, and only guides go on the hood. I wanted to clean my firewall up so I converted my hood latch system to the old style where the latches are on the hood and the spring towers go on the firewall with no cables. The end result was good, but it was hard. The old style spring towers sit about two inches further apart than the new style, which meant I needed custom brackets.
