Default HELP before I pull the steering column

I am looking for advice before I pull the column on my 76.
my problem is that there is play in the ignition lock cylinder. without the key in the cylinder i can move the lock cylinder freely almost to the first click towards run. with the key in the cylinder the car starts just like normal however the radio and wipers have no power. the radio and wipers work if I put the lock cylinder into accessory. is it the lock cylinder or the ignition switch? i'm thinking its the switch????? thanks for your help

It sounds to me that its probably in the steering rack & gear. The gear is plastic & probably worn out. If the radio & wipers don't work, there is probably another problem in the ignition switch.

Look for Jim Shea's papers.

You can see the "rack and gear" about half way down the group of photos in this '76 column rebuild. Use Jim's papers and you will be fine.
