Default 0 - 60?

I don't think anyone even does these on here, but for me its the only measurement of speed I am able to do.

But anyways i am running 6.34 average runs with long tube headers and free flowing exhaust. Light dist. springs, 36 degree timing, no accessories except for ps alt and fan.

Any ideas on how to cut around a second off of my time?

How are you measuring the times? A electric fan should get you 10-15 horse maybe a better intake for a little more power. That is all I can think of off of the top of my head that is cheap.

stop watch and speedo. i know its not accurate but its fairly consistent. i only do these runs so i can see the difference my mods make without going to the track or dyno.

Well, short from the things I mentioned I can't think of anything. Rear gears will get you going faster but you will lose highway drivability and changing those gets spendy. Changing your cam may help but with stock heads you won't get very far. You could change your heads, intake and cam to boost your power up. I'd say you need anywhere from 300-350 flywheel horse to get to in the mid 5 second range depending on your trans and gearing.

You could do this for a reasonable amount.

heads (sold individually)
intake
cam

This is just to give you a idea of a low end build. By the time your done it would be 1000 bucks. It just gets more and more expensive as you go along.

Another thing that would help is a shift kit and a higher stall converter to help get you out of the hole. That is if you have a auto tranny. But this will only help a little.

6's sounds about right for a 77.

You aren't going to take a second off unless you spend some money....

You need better power to weight ratio AND traction.

Reduce weight in the car as a first cost free option.
Spare tyre, tyre carrier, tools, jack etc don't help performance.
Obviously there will be a limit to what you're prepared to do without.

I would imagine you have an auto, and you don't get much wheelspin currently. A high stall (2500~2800) will give you more torque at launch so as to get your car off the line quicker. You may need stickier tyres to get the full benefit, but that will place more stress on the driveline.
Like I said... you need to spend some money, and if you want reliability, the costs soar exponentially

A lower diff ratio as mentioned will also get more torque to the ground and improve accelleration.
A shift kit will reduce the time to change to 2nd,and cut a small amount.

There's heaps you can do to suspension to improve the 0~60 foot time and hence also improve the 0~60mph time... 90/10 shocks at front will help weight transfer to rear to improve hookup.... but at your current power level it's probably not as important as increasing outright torque output from your motor so you can accellerate quicker.

Conventional tactics of better flowing heads and a good torquey cam with good lift, not too big duration will get you on target for mid 5's

Or the cheaper way may be to use small dose of N2O
cheapest bang for buck performance adder.... but does require an engine in good order. About 100 hp shot would help you achieve your goal.

One problem you will have is that many of the mods suggested here will improve your performance but the improvement might be lost in the inaccuracy of your timing method. At a track you get so much accurate data (60 foot, 330 ft, 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile time and speed) indicated to 3 decimal places. Even a dyno only tells you engine data and helps you tune, it doesn't show what a car will really do.

I thought there must be a few dragstrips still operating in CA.

0-60 timer I have one and it is very consistent and seems to be pretty accurate when used in cars that you know the times.

All the above is good information. You have the headers, now a good intake, possibly a cam upgrade and for cheap, increase the air in your front tires to give lessent the rolling resistance, take off as much weight as you can, especially the spare tire. Every 10 pounds you can make the car lighter is equivilent to 1 horsepower.
