Is it necessary to prime the engine with the dist out after installing a new oil pump?

When I replaced mine, I filled the oil filter before installing it then pulled the coil wire and turned the engine over for less than 10 sec and watched the oil pressure gauge come up. Reconnected coil wire and she fired right up at pressure. Granted this was on an engine that had not been rebuilt so the oil passages were still wetted. Mine was simply a pan drop and pump replacement. The distributor pull priming method is without a doubt the safest way to go if you are in doubt.
