ive noticed in a couple photos that some people have a small belt running behind the powersteering pump belt that just goes around the crank pulley and the waterpump pulley. is this nessecary? i am only running the belt around the PS. do i need this small single belt?
mine has no ps or ac. If the alternator belt broke you could still drive the car to the shop with the small water pump belt keeping the motor cool, another Corvette feature
unlike the griswald family wagon where the motor would be cooking too if the alt belt went
You should be able to get the belt from most any parts place if the counter person is any good. I put that belt on mine to help reduce squealing of the water pump pulley at higher RPMs. I think it was 36 inches long. A bear to get on though, but well worth it.
I just went through thid on a 77 L-82 4 speed car with air conditioning.
I had the motor rebuilt and wanted to get the car running without the AC compressor.
So without the compressor belt, the only belt turning the water pump was the alternator belt and I wanted 2 belts turning the water pump.
I bought the short crank/water pump belt for cars without AC and tried installing it but it was too short.
I went back and forth to NAPA trying several belts but could not find one to fit.
I researched the part numbers in AIM and discovered that cars without AC came with a different water pump pulley and a different crankshaft pulley. The pulleys are differnt diameters than the pulleys for cars with AC.
I bought the correct non AC pulleys from Corvette Central, mounted them, and then the short belt I orignally bought fit right up.
Why bother. I loaned my car to the inlaws last weekend for a cruise event. Somehow, the alt belt broke which in turn also threw the a/c and p/s belts. They drove the car another 40 miles to my house with no problems. Put three new belts on two days ago. Besides, how would you tension that belt since both pulleys are in fixed positions?

The correct belt is sized for the fixed pulley distance and does not have to be tensioned. You do have to remove one pulley to install the belt though.
