Manual vs Automatic Starter
Question is, Is it true that there is a different nose piece for a OEM manual tranny starter versus a automatic tranny starter.
I believe someone answered my question recently but I can not find the thread. I think they even mentioned part numbers or style numbers for the two.

The one I have is aluminum and has the staggered bolt pattern. I just found my Ecklers catalog and it showed both the manual tranny starter with straight side to side bolt pattern and the one I have for auto with the staggered bolt pattern. Thanks for getting me on the right path. I had installed a auto in a original 3 speed car back in the 70's but do not remember intentionally having to change the starter. The tranny came from a wrecked car we had so I may have used the donor
car starter without remembering it.

I see that Eckler has one that fits BB or SB auto/manual in my year (71). I think I will take mine apart to see if it is worth just changing the nose or whether I need to go the the local parts house for a new one.

I believe there are only two starters. One for the small flywheel (12.75") and one for the large (14", 168 tooth) which I believe all our Vettes had. Yes, the starter for use with the large flywheel has the staggered bolt pattern and the small has mounting bolts that are in line.
If there are different starters in the catalogs, I'm guessing they have different firepower and/or different solenoid (two wire vs. three).
FWIW
