If there was a trusted Corvette / GM specialist in your town that could offer competitive prices. Would you utilize them or mail order and do it yourself?
I'd use them to supply parts (but only because they're cheaper than importing parts myself). I'd still do all the work myself though (apart from anything to do with an Auto 'box - they look more complicated than Quantum Theory :( )

Use them to accomplish repairs that I can not do myself.
I am lucky because I have very good Vette Mechanic here works out of his house and really knows his poopie.

Depending upon what I need, I usually go to my Bow Tie parts man first. If he can get what I want (and remember, we're talking 20 and 30 year old Corvettes, here) and if the part is visually akin to what I need (GM has a policy of swapping newer parts for older ones), I order through him. If he cannot get what I need or if his GM replacement part won't do for either of my Corvettes (they're original), then I go to the aftermarket providers. For Lidia's '96, we go to GM and only GM. Other than a replacement battery, there is nothing on the '96 which isn't genuine GM.
:)
I don't have lots of free time anymore so more and more stuff that I would have done myself is now going to good local places.
Example : The 74 needed a new power steering setup (pump, control valve, slave cylinder). I bought the parts from Vette Brakes, took them down to a good local shop, and 3 days later my car had power steering again and a 4 wheel alignment. Total labor bill excluding the alignment (I would have had to pay for that anyway) was $240. For me that would have neen a full weekend project. Instead, I dropped it off Tuesday morning, picked it up Friday morning and drove it all weekend :)
Now, all the interior stuff I will do myself. I think I get more satisfaction out of that becuase I can see my work everytime I get in the car.
You also hear "Man, those did those seats ... they look great!" alot more than you hear "Man, who did that power steeriing pump ... it looks great"

I guess I'm kind of the oppisite, I've done 99% of the mechanical repairs, and have done some cosmetic restoration, like new gauge cluster and new lenses for dash, but am not comfortable doing this type of work, which I seldom perform, unless I am very confident I can do it well, because it IS something that shows and everyone sees. Repainting the exterior, and installation of new seat covers, would probably fall into this category, however, believe I can install new carpet.
I don't let anyone touch anything on my car.
But as far as parts goes, I do have a kind of "famous" supplier in my area.
But I like ordering parts online so I know where they come from, If the supplier had something I wanted in stock and it looked like good quality I'd buy it, otherwise I usually order online.
Parts wise, sure, I'd rather help someone out local if I could. Most service work I would still do myself, there are certain things that I'm sure I would use a place like that for, my biggest reason is I don't really have any place to work on a car over more then a 24 hour period, since I don't have my own garage at home to work on it and I only have one day off at a time during the week. A good example would probably be the rear wheel bearings, I've never done them on a vette before, I could probably do them, I'm sure I have the mechanical ability, but I would like to have a little more then a days worth of time in case I would have a wrong part or something unforseen would occure or I would need some advice. If it was in my own garage and I wouldn't hessitate to do the rear wheel bearings since I would be able to do it at my leasure. Any one day project I would still deffinitly do myself.
