I have the radiator out to be repaired and have decided this would be a good time to go serpentine and e-fans. While at all this, I found my harmonic balancer to be bad. Since I need balancer and reverse rotation water pump, I also bought new Cloyes timing chain (while Im there repair).
Now, I want to clean out engine block and heater core if possible w/o radiator in car. How can I go about this. Thanks
open the drain plugs on the lower part of the block to drain out the remaining old coolant still left in the motor. There is probably 1-2 gallons left in there.
Be very cautious using the commercial flushes. Very often all kinds of leaks start soon after. Washing away all that scale and rust often exposes weak spots in freeze plugs etc.
That sounds easy enough. Should I use some sort of flush or just hose it out?
I hosed mine out from different ways to try and get the sediment out. Flushed thru the w/pump holes out the drain holes and vice versa, flushed out the h/core both ways.

Thats what I was thinking, just needed someone else to tell me.
What has been suggested so far should do all you want. However, as the Forum is a place for knowledge sharing. It was suggested to me a while ago that introducing air in to the flushing water stream would increase the flush effect. I used this set up for another purpose and found that the combination of water and air did increase the scour effect.
I never new there were plugs in the block, are they like pipe fittings?Anyone have a picture of the plugs?
I still have a lot to put back together and was thinking of how to flush it out as well. If you pull both sides will it flush out the other side?
Sure can learn alot from you guys.
Thanks
Yes, they are simply pipe plugs. Each plug only drains the side it's on. No pic but they are in the middle of the block just above the oil pan rail like A88FXRS said.
