Default Rear Differential Noise

So I though I was done tearing into my '77 -- NO!

Gary did an awesome job rebuilding my steering box, which I got back last week. I replace all of the PS components and box...cleaned'r up and after a 30 minute drive, pulled into my driveway and heard a rhythmic "clanking" noise, which I though was from the right rear brake caliper (I replaced all of the calipers about 2 weeks ago). I lifted the car and check both calipers, they were good. With the rear wheels off the ground, I started the car and put it into drive and let the rear wheels spin freely. I think the sound is coming from the differential -- what are some commong failures, I could try to go look for?

I am going to change the fluid first since I have not done that yet. How do I know if mine has positraction??

If you let the wheels hang and run it, you will get binding and clanking. I wouldnt trust that as a good test.

Don't run the driveline with the wheels off the ground; that is guaranteed to give you problems! The noise you get doing this is your half shafts trying to eat the universal joints.

Never Never Never run the car with the wheels just hanging. A sure fire way to destroy the ujoints.

You drove the car for 30 minutes and when you pulled into your driveway you heard a clunking noise? So are you saying that this noise was noticeable throughout the drive or only when you were about to shut off the car?

I would suspect that if it's a driveline malfunction; you would have heard it during your drive. At any rate; I would leave the rear jacked up and level the halfshafts with jacks and rotate the assembly by hand only to determine the source of the noise.

Yes , halfshafts are the drive shafts from the diff, connected to the u-joints, connected to the halfshaft to the wheel hubs. Leveling the halfshaft will allow the universal joints to turn freely without binding.
