I am trying to help a friend swap out the original 350 crossfire and 700R-4 to a 383 4 speed Muncie with hydraulic clutch and dual exhaust.
Needless to say, I need a crossmember and to change the pedals.
I have OEM pedals from an 80 4-speed car and I need to know if there is anything else I need. The crossmember I want needs to have provisions for the dual exhaust and the correct position for the STD tranny mount. I can make it, but I DON'T WANT TO!!!
78-82 crossmembers do not have dual exh provisions. To get dual exh provisions you either find an earlier one and do some fabbing, use the 82 and do some fabbing for the mount, sell the unique 82 crossmember (mount) and 700R4 -at least the tailhousing- to someone wanting a 700R4 swap and buy a 78-81 4-sp crossmember ( still no dual exh), or buy a BowTie overdrive 700R4 crossmember and fab the rear mount (do get dual exh). Unless you accept the pipe going under the stock crossmember, you have to fab something. You need a driveshaft for an 80-81 4-sp or TH350 car, earlier will not work due to the aluminum diff. The 82 driveshaft will be too short although the yoke should work.
Be prepared to have a lot more fun driving your car after this swap.
I can't help w/the corvette specifics (still a rookie when it comes to C-3 but starting to figure them out) but I went from automatic to a 383 and Tremec 5spd on my muscle car and it's soooooo much more funner now. The sound of the engine when your shifting gears is one of the most beautiful sounds on the planet. Enjoy.
I ordered a dual exhaust from corvette central (Magnaflow?) that sends both pipes down the right side with a cross over were the cat sits. Bolt up in stock location and hangers. $230 for pipes w/out muff.

Just curious...took this crossmember off a Canadian 1979 L48..isn't this a dual exhaust version?
That crossmember looks like it would work. Talking not to Bow Tie Overdrives about the crossmember. Thanks and I think I like this one better if I can find one. Any suggestions?
Also, I read on this forum about a hydraulic master cylinder combo that should work, but I must be blind but I can't find it again. Anyone have suggestions for the hydraulics? We are using Wilwood hydraulic thro-out bearing.
Are you talking about a hydraulic clutch master cylinder set up? Also, I thought the newer C3s had their crossmember welded in? That why I went for the CC dual exh..
HotRodRobert and everybody else!!!!!!!! THE DUAL EXHAUST I WROTE ABOUT IS DEFECTIVE FOR THE 82 ONLY!!!! COVETTE CENTRAL CALLED ME (CAN YOU BELEIVE IT!) AND ASKED IF I INSTALLED IT. I SAID NO AND CC EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THEY WILL BE REMANUFACTURING NEW FRONT PIPES FOR THE 82 TOO BE SENT OUT TO ME NO CHARGE!!!

Is this not a common cross member?..or do I have the only one ever made for a 1979 Corvette I was planning on selling it at some point...but may wait now..just in case someone wants to do a magazine special about it

Yes, I saw a thread somewhere about using a Chevy truck master of some kind and now I can't find it again
I need to know if anyone has info on a hydraulic conversion for the C3 clutch. Please????
That crossmember looks like what I need. Anyone know where to get one or how much for this one??
Had the same one in my 1978 l48 with automatic transmission. One I got from a later 79 frame did not have the holes for the exhaust to pass thru. I'm not sure if the 79 frame was from an automatic or standard transmission car. I've got one of the bowtie crossmembers as well, the tranny mounting pad is in a different position due to the length of the 700r4 tranny.

Maybe this will help? My 95 C3500 dump w/ a 5 speed had a hydraulic clutch. Look it up on NAPA and that should get you started

My post in that thread, about modifying and installing the 85 Chevy pickup clutch master cylinder, has 2 errors: I actually used 3/8" x 1 1/2" hex head bolts to mount the unit to the firewall. NOT 9/16" x 1 1/2" bolts. I actually drilled the mounting holes in the firewall to 3/8" NOT 9/16"
Good Luck!

Reason: Corrected another error in my original posting.
After looking at the thread 78IndyPace suggested, my 82 firewall is nothing like the older C-3. There are no provisions for the clutch of any kind and the brake combination valve looks to be in the way of anything for the clutch in the area.
