I bought a turn key engine with a Holly hp 4150 650 cf. The car runs good but I really have not let it out yet but it's hard to start and when you accelarate it puffs black smoke out of the pipes. any suggestions? on the prob. my dad says float needs adjusting.
hi there, A couple of things you could look at are:
1) This is the most important......the float level ( should barely trickle out of the screw hole in the side of the float bowl).
2) The accelerator pump may be squirting too much fuel, so you could make a linkage adjustment (move the linkage to the outboard hole).
3) The secondary jets may be too big...put smaller jets in ( its a good idea to take the jets out anyhow and record the size, and to see if they are clear).
4) check to make sure the choke is opening when the engine is warm and not sticking partially open.
Thanks, the 4150 Hp has no chock so that's not a prob and I would think that the engine builders would have matched the jets to their engine. The linkage could be possible or the float I guess could have gotten out of whack during shipping. It did come with a video that I have not watched yet so I guess I need to do that first
excuse my stupidity but what is a blown power valve?
Sounds like you might need to get some reference material before you start adjusting the carb, number of good books out there on how to tune a Holley. Once you've go the basics down then post some specific questions, it will speed up your tuning process
