Default gas guage pegged

Today I started my 75 and the gas gauge immediately pegged beyond full. The car had 3/4 tank full, and the guage suddenly buried itself. After driving, no movement of the guage. Where do I begin?

If it's pegged way past full, you've got an open circuit in the sending unit wiring. Will is right, check for loose wires at the sending unit first, since that's the easiest thing. If all the wiring checks out OK and you've got +12v on one side of the sending unit, and a good cround to the other side, then the sending unit could be bad.

I had the same problem with the gauge on my 75, turned out to be a bad ground connection at the tank. If you find you need a sending unit though I have one I'll sell you, apparently they are hard to come by because most of the books I have don't list them for a 75 and if they do you have to call for a price.

My 68 GTO does the same thing sometimes. I just wiggle the wire at the tank and the needle appears.

This happened on my '68 this past summer. Bad ground. Check also your rear taillights with the switch "on". I believe the taillights are also grounded with the fuel tank sending unit. They won't "light" if they are not grounded either. :yesnod:
