Default NEW MEMBER - C3 rear end trouble

Hello all, first post for a new member here. I recently purchased a 1969 350/350 4 speed car in Fathom Green. I'm loving it! It has a few issues that I am going to try to resolve. I'm hearing some noize coming from the rear end. I did a search here and found that changing the gear lube and adding the additive is a good first step. I am wondering what the capacity is? I thought is was two bottles and a 4oz bottle of additive. Is this correct?

Next, I'll be trying to figure out why one headlight door will not raise!

Welcome to the forum Tom. The capacity seems right, and basically just fill it till it pukes, and cap it up and wipe off any excess.

As far as the headlights, if one works and one doesn't, you might be dealing with either a bad relay, or a bad actuator.

To test this, swap the hoses from the good side's relay to the bad side's actuator. If the light pops up, then it's the relay, if it doesn't, it might be the actuator.

You'll want to get an AIM for your car...it's a very good book to keep on hand for these types of things.

Oh, post pics of your car...we love pics here.

The 69s' used one relay for both headlights---so if just one works, my bet would be the actuator on the bad headlight or a bad vacuum line. You could try snipping the very end of the hoses too, to get a more snug fit on the actuator as well.

here is a helpful hint. Put in the additive first, then top off the rear end with the oil. If yo dont, once it is full then you cant add the additive. I know it sounds simple, but its a fact some people overlook.

Thanks for all the help guys! I hope to get the diff done tonight! If so, I'll get some pictures tomorrow or this week sometime. I have heard one bottle of additive and now two bottles. Is there an advantage to putting two in, or is this the amount you are supposed to add?

I will have to get famalliar with the parts for the headlight operation. This is the first one I have had trouble with. The bucket will go up with a little help, but not on its own.

2 lube 1 additive

Hope you have a pump to get the old out.
I installed a drain plug in mine when it was torn apart.

Is a 4oz bottle normal??? I thought my additive from the GM parts department was like 6 or 8oz????
I used the GM factory additive-what ever size that comes in....

60 oz total fill. If you're running a stock spring posi and it's hammering add 2 -(4oz) bottles of additve. Best to suck out the old stuff and go with Lucas 85-140 gear oil and the 2 bottles. If that doesn't solve it then only posi tune will. I'll PM you a link with the info.
Good luck

I hear it coming off of a stop, and turning. EX: Stopped at a red light, and as I'm making the turn, I'm hearing the clunking.

I assume it is stock. I already purchased 2 bottles of GM 80/90, and 1 bottle of additive. I'll stop on the way home and get another bottle.

I did buy a pump. The bottle I bought was the GM additive, and it was 4 oz. Maybe the sell a bigger bottle?

Default Rear end trouble

If you have the clunking noise when turning it probably are the clutches in the diff............. Try turning slowly and listening as you turn right and left........ If the replacement of fluids does not cure the problem then rebuilding clutches will be in order....Good Luck

Welcome Bloozeman, Lots of great info here. When I did my rearend I poured the additive into the lube bottle after I had pumped some into the diff. All going to blend anyway. I reversed the tubing on the pump and pumped in the lube.

I agree with the other members on the clunking .....if your lube doesn't help then you've probably got a bad clutch.

Nothing you can't fix with some time and an order or two! Good luck and welcome to the forum,,,,,these guys help keep you sane!
