Whats the cheapest way to........

500 hp is a big number. Lots of nitrous and prayer would be your easiest and cheapest way by far. If you want some modicum of reliability, you're talking about very free flowing heads, big cam, high compression (or forced induction), and lots of gas.

No way for nitrous!!! About $2500 for a stroker kit, heads, holley carb, and new intake. Would that get you about 500?

I dont think you can get there for $2500 unless you are really good at finding good used parts.
You will probably want to build at least a 383 for a reasonable shot at 500 hp & pump gas,
but I bet you spend close to double that $2500.

You are going to need some more serious parts for a 500 HP 383. Mine is right at 500 HP and my motor is way more than 2500. More like 5 to 7K if you want it reliable. The easiest way is cubic inches. A real big SB $$$ or go to a BB and get 500 HP easy. There is no cheap horse power out there. If you think you can just throw a set of heads and a cam at a stroker SB you will get about 430 to 450 HP. You had better have a big set of cylinder heads and a very large cam. It can be done but don't expect to do it cheaply.

With that L82 you can get about 300 rear wheel HP for around $600 doing a Vortec top end. That's assuming you don't have to rebuild the bottom end. If you do need to bore and do a fresh build with over sized pistons add another $500. Oh, free flowing exhaust will be needed no matter which way you go if you intend to get any real power out of that engine. A true dual 2.5" exhaust system with a pair of Magna Flows is the ticket...if not headers.

for 500hp the cost is going to be a lot........ my buddy just had a 383 stroker biult for his car with a Weiland 6-71 blower. Puts out 550hp at the crank but it cost him almost $10,000.
no matter what the engine build costs, with 500hp you BETTER think about other upgrades so the rest of the car survives the motor. My friend had to have the 700R4 tranny in his car rebuilt to handle the power of his new motor and that was another couple thousand and he still has to worry about beefing up the rear end, halfshafts, yokes, etc.
If you want all that power to get to the street you need sticky tires but with that much power if it hooks up well you WILL break something in the rear if you don't beef it up so whatever it costs to get the motor to the HP level you want you better figure on at least the same amount to spend on upgrading the rest of the drivetrain if you don't want even more expensive problems later on.
