I'm pretty sure the starter itself is going bad, so as soon as I get my jack back to the house (it's in the shop with the Rustnag) I'm going to replace it with a mini (eBay).
While I'm there, the wiring runs right by the headers, and the wiring isn't looking to be in such great shape either. I'd say the heat is getting to the wiring, so I'd like to offer some protection for it.
Ideas?
We're fixing to have a run of nice weather, so I'd like to get this task out of the way this week...
I replaced my starter wiring- I cut it back to the top of the firewall where it turns and starts down. All new teflon insulated wires. I cut the plastic sleeve off the butt splice connectors, new wire, crimped and then soldered. Covered with heat shrink tubing, then wrapped with 2 layers of 33+ black tape,(wrapped so the layers are crossed) one layer of a red rubber hi-temp tape, and then covered the whole harness with DEI's reflective tape..

For the smaller stater wires i used the wire heat shield for spark plug wire sold by JC Whitney - same fiberglass coth sold my MSD and others but for a lot less $$$. Part #'s ZX890165N, ZX142983R, ZX890163P, ZX890167A.
For the cable and the now covered smaller wires i run them all through a spark plug wire sock - 'bout 6" long fiberglass sock (# ZX264222).
