Timing chain on 327 replacing

What steps are necessary to replace the timing chain on a 327 I have removed the timing cover and have replaced the old chain and gears, but am having trouble replacing the cover, Do I have to remove the oil pan and how do I drop it?

For a good seal you should drop the pan.
Drop the steering Idler link(unbolt from the frame) and you should have plenty of clearance to drop the pan

While this is true, you may not need to do so. Loosen the pan's bolts but leave at least the very rear ones in place. You may have to pull the front 1/3 of the bolts.

Drop the pan then as much as is needed to install the timing cover properly.

The "bubba" alternative is to leave the oil pan alone and clean the front of the pan and the groove in the timing cover. Fill the groove with RTV and re-install.
