The headlight doors havent worked since I owned it. Bought all new vacuum lines, The Doc Rebuild Vacuum Line poster, boot and seal kits for the actuators, 2 new actuator relays, vacuum filter and splitter, basically everything short of new actuators. I rebuilt the actuators with the boot and seal kits, installed the new hoses and filters, cleaned the springs and greased everything up real good and fired it up. They actually worked!!! I sat out there for thirty minutes drinking beer and popping them up and down. Only problem is the right side will not come up until the left is all the way up, in other words they wont open at the same time. Do I need a new actuator?
Also I thought it was supposed to retain some vacuum in the reservoir to opent the lights when the engine was off, is that true, because mine wont open unless the engine is running. Do I still have a vacuum issue?
Yes you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere if the reservoir will not hold vacuum...I would be checking the check valves first.
As far as the slow light, first, get under the car, and with the engine off, manually push it up and let it back down. Listen and watch for any parts that may be binding or contacting that might cause it to catch up and operate slowly. If it's okay, try swapping the lines off of the relays so they operate the opposite side actuator.
See if the slow one changes sides. If it doesn't change anything, then you probably have a bad actuator.
Mine do that.....someone once said its because the right one is further from the vacuum source so theres a slight delay. I had very slow responce times with NON-AC Delco relays. The only lubricant that would them from stick was synthetic Mobil 1 engine oil.

Interesting. My right one is the quickest to react. They move within 5-7 seconds of each other. It doesn't really matter to me as long as they go up and down consistently.
