Got an 81 stock 350.Starting her up first time for the day it has to crank
over at least 10 times to get fuel to start the engine. Otherwise starts and runs fine.Fuel pump or carb???????????
...Or fuel filter.
I put an electric in mine and have the ability to pre-prime the bowl. It should be wired into an oil pressure switch to cut it off if there is no pressure. For an accident. The directions said to wire the pump to the starter for engine starting but I wired to a momentary switch instead. Prime it and start.
Check the accelerator pump first to see if the bowl has gas in it. Pump the throttle and look down the bores for a spray of fuel. Even if your fuel pump is bad you should have fuel in the bowl.
You can also do a volume check on the pump.
If your pumping the gas pedal during this starting time I would say its your choke.
Barry, you're pumping the pedal a few times to pump fuel into the engine, right? After you pump the pedal a few times, press it all the way to the floor once to set the choke, then let the pedal up, then start the car. You probably knew this already, but you never know...
I have the same thing with my 69. I have to adjust the rod for the choke because it doesn't close all the way when cold.If I don't remove the air cleaner cover and hold the choke closed it won't start, close the choke and a couple of pumps and it fires right up. This is only the first time I start it after a week or more, then it's good the rest of the day. Have to make time for this soon
