Default How to remove front rotor studs

What's a good way to remove/replace the front rotor/hub wheel studs? Place a nut on a stud (to prevent mushrooming) and then knock it out with an impact hammer? Or is a press, to push the stud out, the preferred method? Similarly to replace the stud, pound it back with the impact hammer or use a press?

I don't have a press, but will buy one if it's the neatest less damaging way to remove the stud. I do have an impact hammer.

I need to remove the studs from a NOS rotor/hub and a slightly used rotor/hub assembly. Why? I painted the rotor hat sections with POR 15. Unfortunately is was a can that had been opened before. It started setting up on me too quick, leaving a lot of brush marks. I had an unopened can, opened it, and went over the brush marks, but that didn't work, and the top layer started pinholeing. Also, the new can was slightly different color (grey). Anyhow, the rotor/hub assemblies now look awful. I need to remove the POR 15. If I remove the studs, I can use a grinder and get rid of the hardened POR. Also, POR 15 and Chardonney don't mix well.

If you have a good sized brass hammer your in business. Yes a press would pop them out just as fast if you have one. Just reverse either procedure to put them back in.

Don't beat on the studs with a hammer - you can damage the bearings doing it that way. Buy yourself a ball joint press to press them out...

Stick a cheap socket on the end of the stud so the tool won't slip off the stud's threads when you start to tighten down the tool. The screw part of the tool will stay aligned in the part of the socket that usually goes on a ratchet. The other side will prevent the tool from slipping off the stud.

Go to a machine shop that has a press and buy the guy a beer. Works everytime!

look at the kurl on the studs, you may end up replacing them. If so then hammer them out. Sometimes they're flattened and will not bite in like new ones will.
