Directionals, both left and right work normal until i turn on headlights. Sometimes one side works and not the other and sometimes neither work. Also, the directional arrows in the dash both light up when i just turn on the headlights alone. They worked fine last year, but i sent the car out to be painted and this is the way i got it back from the body shop. The dash needed to be removed due to rotted windshield frame. Everything else electrically works fine.
Please help...anybody...please!!
PS...tried to run new ground wiring, removed the dash for inspection 3 times with no help at all. Can it be a defective headlight switch? Sometimes i need to play with the switch to light the dash.
There is also a dash ground that is bolted to the inner wall just behind the headlight switch, you may want to check it. Its screwed into the wall above the hood pull.
My money would be on the grounds at the lights also, but.....
I has similar problems with mine the other night. I had changed out the flasher switch on the alarm and turn signal. When I pulled the car back inside the shop and hit the brakes I noticed the front park lights came on! Also the turn signals had quit working. I installed a new flasher on the emergency flasher (fusebox) and a new turn signal one (behind the glove box) and put the old alarm flasher back in and everything worked perfectly. The emergency and turn signal flashers are 552's on my 78 and the alarm was a 562? (I think). I really didnt think the flashers were the problem when I started tracking it down but it was the only thing I had changed. May be something more to it but its working fine for now! Good luck with it, these electrical gremlins are a PITA!!!
Probably the front. The dash turn indicators are connected to the front signals-when they lose the ground the feed for the parking lights back feeds through the turn signal bulb and lights the little dash indicator.I'd almost bet if he would remove the front turn bulbs the dash indicators wouldnt come on with the headlights anymore.
Ok, new problem. I got the trun signals working now with my headlights. Was a poor connection at the front of the car. Thanks everyone! But.....Now i am blowing the stoplight fuse. I traced the wiring from brake light switch at the pedal to the wiring in the rear of the car. No pinched or burnt wires anywhere that i could see. I tried another stop light switch but the same result. I cleaned and replaced the stop light bulbs and sockets. Still not working, just continue to blow fuse after fuse. At one point today, i got them to work, but after driving the car for 20 minutes, i had the same problem.

Any suggestions???
Dont forget that the power from the brake light switch goes up the steering column to the turn signal switch then back down the column and THEN to the rear of the car.
Your exactly right!!! I found the problem before i read your answer. It turned out to be in the column. The short was in the 4 way flasher in the column. Replaced the turn signal switch and now all is well!! So far anyway!!!
Thanks everyone in the forum who offered their help and wisdom!
