torque converter
Anyone know if a torque converter makes a rattlling noise if it's going bad?

Yes it does. It happened to my '80 a few years ago.

Check your flex plate also, it can make noise if it is cracked.

I had a 68 Chevelle that started rattling as you describe ... it was a cracked flexplate.

It only does it at idle in nuetral. If I am stopped and it's in gear it does not make a noise. Then if you drive at speed it makes a noise. I checked the bolts

Sounds more like the tranny itself, since it doesn't make noise until you are moving. The flex plate and converter are turning when idling.
