Door ajar light is stuck on. I am assuming there is a grounded switch somewhere in the circuit. Anyone have any pointers on where to check? Does this circuit touch the alarm circuit at all? Is it just the two doors, or could the hood or alarm switch be involved as well? Alarm system and door buzzer are all inop. Any pointers on where to start with this mess are appreciated in advance.
The switches for the door ajar light are the same ones used for the alarm, but the hood switch won't make the light come on as far as I know, and as said they are the ones at the back of the door frames. Something easy to try first with the ignition on is to push in the switches with your hand and see if that turns off the light. That will tell you if you have a loose wire/bad switch, or if the door just isn't pushing it in far enough to open the circuit.
The door ajar switches (on my 70) have a black and a white wire going into the nylon connector that is a part of the switch. When you open the door, the door ajar switch plunger extends and shorts the black and white wire and the door ajar light comes on. The connector pins are very close together and if they should touch, the door ajar light will stay on.
To get to the door ajar switch...unscrew the nut on the switch body (is it 7/16?). However, as you start rotate the nut holding a wrench in one hand, use the fingers of your other hand to pinch the plunger to prevent it from rotating as you unscrew the nut. (If you allow the plunger to rotate, you'll wind up and maybe break to small white and yellow wires). Pull the switch out and look at the connector pins...make sure they are not touching. Put a piece of electrical tape between them to make sure they never touch. Pull out the door ajar switch on the other door also and have a look.
If you need more visability, remove the door ajar access plate. It's inside the wheel well opposite the door ajar switch.
On my 1970, the door ajar switchs are not a part of the alarm system. The main door open switch, on the forward door sill that turns on the internal cabin lights, is part of the alarm system, as is the hood switch up neer the windshield wiper motor.
My 73 has small square rubber blocks on the door that the switch contacts, if they fall off your light will stay on
Sounds like the place to start. I just went out and looked and the rubber blocks are not there. You can clearly see where they go. Now just to find some.
