Still trying to get mt 69 350/350 back to stock. Just hocked up my new reverse light switch at the manual transmission and noticed all 4 taillights have red lenses (no inside white lenses) and none of them light up when I'm in reverse! Closer investigation revealed a lot of spliced wires.
What I would like to know is of the 4 taillights what light lights when.
Headlights on ...just outside taillights on?
Turn ... just the appropriate outside light blinking?
Braking ... just the outside lights to higher intensity?
I think I can do the rewiring if I know what light is suppose to light when.
Help is all appreciated.
Only the outside lights do anything. the inners are reverse lights only.
So;
lights on == outside lights on low dim
brakes on == outside lights on bright
turn signal == outside light flashes
It was a popular conversion back in the day, my buddy changed his 69 to have the 68 tail lights and mounted a Lucas 1/2 miler for backup light and tailgaters
It does look like the wire splices are very old. I did think about leaving it because it does look good, but I am working on getting back to stock.
Thanks for the info.
Dont replace all 4 . Just replace the inside ones to the correct 69 style with the white lenses.
OK. I will have to change the reverse light bulb holders to really be stock because the inside lights light bulb socket is for a 1157 (two prong bulb) not an 1156 single prong bulb .. I just noticed that!
Now I' really confused. Got the left rear working and am working on the right rear. Now nothing flashes (it use to). Checked the fuse .. it's OK. Checked the flasher ITS NOT THERE. I have two pink and one purple wire running to an empty electrical clip. Please help if you can.
If you're going to remove some of the interior pieces, you might consider just replacing the entire rear harness with a new one. This is a nice way to repair the previous splicing, etc.
A new harness is easy to install at the rear of the car. However, for the inside, you have to pull up the storage compartment carpet on the driver's side. The rear harness is routed their. Also, you'll have to remove the door ajar switches and reconnect the new harness into them. The fiber optics are routed along the front of the storage compartment (under the carpet), then under the parking brake console to the fiber optic panel under the shifter. Then the remaining harness goes under the carpet by the sill plate, the carpet can be pulled up for access, and finally you just unsnap the old connector and snap in your new connector.

I've been timid about doing just what you recommended because I thought I might have to remove the gas tank to install the harness. Thanks for the info.
