Default Side Pipe Setup - HELP!

The 1981 has a 468” big block. Hooker Headers are installed and were connected to 2 ½ inch pipes and then through Flow Master 40 mufflers. Problem is the noise level IN the car is too loud even with several layers of Dynamat.

I intend to go to 3” side pipes, black ceramic coated. The existing headers can be used by making mandrel bent pipes welded to get forward a bit and then a 90 degree turn to the side pipes.

Also I could go for another set of headers.

The Hookers, by the way had an interference problem with #1 and #3 spark plug boots. Had to insert sections into the primary tubes and recoat for clearance. Their side pipe header appears to have the same problem and this car doesn’t need any more primary tube length. Plenty of bottom end for a cruiser and standard type tires.

Also I’ve thought about a 2X5 rectangular section to pass under the frame for ground clearance.

So far the spiral baffles look good; http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/streetrod.html but I’m sure there’s a lot more you guys can contribute.

I also will need heat shields. They will be gloss black, powder coated.

Finally the side pipe installation should be higher than the 2” OEM deal.

So fire away guys. Need info, pictures and links.

TNX …………… Doug

PS Car should be done in about a month or so and I’ll get some pictures posted. This project has been going for almost four years.
