How many L88s were made in 68 and 69?
Are crate motors avaliable?

Check out this website:
http://www.rowleycorvette.com/stats68.html

They show 116 produced in 1969, and only 80 produced in 1968.
I don't think you can buy an "L-88" crate engine today, although you can get some very powerful bigblock crate engines. I don't know if it was ever available as a crate engine, even in the late 60s. Good question tho. MJ

Never heard of an L-88 crate motor either but I believe they do sell a ZL-1 crate motor! :)

Jason,

L-88 short blocks were available for a while; 3970699 was the part number for the second design (open chamber) short block and 3970688 was the part number for the first design (closed chamber) version. Both were discontinued many years ago. I would gather that complete L-88 and ZL-1 engine assemblies were available initially, but they didn't even make my old parts book so my guess is that they weren't around much after 1969; after that is was short blocks only.

A copy of the ZL-1 block is available today as a bare block (cylinder case and main bearing caps... that's it) from GM. I had heard that the list price was some rediculous number (like $8,200), but I've been quoted prices as low as $5,200 which would still lighten the old wallet!

Regards,

Rowdy Rat--Interesting, thanks for that information! :) Yeah, if I had an all metal bumper Vette I'd still be interested in doing some kind of custom ZL1 conversion...

:)
