Does anyone know how many 78 L-82 4-speed vettes were made, or where I can find the information? I've looked in a couple of spots and could only find total 4-speed production numbers, not just L-82 specific. Thanks
Yogi, don't let some of the numbers on the 4-speed production fool you. Most of the info out there just shows OPTION (M21 Close Ratio) totals and do not show you how many cars retained the STANDARD (M20 Wide Ratio) setup. This is the Manual tranny usage for 78:
Now the M21 CLose Ratio tranny was only availalble with the L82 so we know without a doubt that at least 3,385 L82 4-speeds were built. The question is now how many L82s kept the standard M20 Wide Ratio. We can look to RPO G95 and see that 395 cars had this. This option was only available with the L82 and M20 and gave you a 3.36 axle in place of the 3.70 which was used on all other manual tranny L82s. So now we are at 3,780 L82 4-speeds. Next you have to take a guess on how many L82s with the M20 did not order G95 and kept the 3.70 axle. So if you figure that maybe 800 cars were so equipped (the remaining M20s went into the L48s) you get a total of about 4,600 L82 4-speeds.
