Default Wiper Door Problem....

......and, yes, I've searched past threads. My problem is .....nothing happens when pushing the switch, no door opening, nothing. But, after pulling the override switch, the door opens and THEN you can operate the wipers using the regular switch.

Also, on start-up, the wiper door does the up-down routine. I've replaced the check valve, wiper relay, and almost all the vac hoses....the wiper switch solenoid has also been suggested as a culprit; can this be reached without removing the entire upper dash panel/tach/speedo ? ......any suggestions or experiences appreciated...

Hate to be a hair bringer of bad news...but it probably is that solenoid switch up under the lower backside of the tach....you CAN get to it, with either a younger flexible body and smaller hands, but us Ne ander thals have a harder time, some of us have to remove the driver's seat.....

you really want to avoid removing that speedo/tach panel if at all possible, unless there are other problems, in which case maybe you want to kill it all at once....

it CAN be reached from under the dash on your back with a flashlight....

maybe....

Everything I've read says the wiper solenoid is is not reachable without dismantling the dash.

You might check the wiper actuator and make sure it doesn't have a leak.

Also, any leak in that entire vacuum system can cause problems elsewhere. Make sure your headlight actuators are sound also.

..
....seems I'll make an attempt at the solenoid, as everything works OK when it is bypassed....maybe I'll be lucky and reach up, and it'll only be a loose vac hose....

Odds are that it's an electrical problem, not a vacuum hose problem. Did it ever work ok that you know of? If a vacuum hose was off, the door should stay open, or it should work normally.

The hose was just wishful thinking on my part.......yes, everything functioned perfectly until now....I just dread having to get at that solenoid

ddecart, you might have just answered my problem. My wiper door comes up when I start my 69 and it won't go down unless I disconnect the green vacuum hose on the back of the wiper door actuator. The line seems to constantly have suction is that right?

You can reach and work on the wiper solenoid/switch mounted to the back of the tach. It would be easiest to remove the seat so that you can lay on your back to do it...but that's a lot less trouble than removing the dash. You will also need to remove the mounting screws on the manual override switch plate, remove the A/C duct (if you have one) and get a good LED light to help see what you are doing. There is only one nut (or screw...I can't remember which) holding the solenoid switch to the tach, so it's easy to remove. Identify the hoses and connector so that you can put them back correctly. I would remove it and see if you can fix it, before you spend $80 to replace it. Your problem could also be the wiper switch or the improper installation of the wiper switch connector (upside down installation); so check those things first.

Thanks, you gave me hope.....I usually don't have a problem contorting so if it can be reached, I'll reach it.........will try to find time this weekend.
