Quadrajet question
What is the difference between a Quadrajet for an
automatic vs. a 4-speed? Can one be converted from one to the other?
Also, does anyone have knowledge of the re-manufactured
Rochester Quadrajets sold by Champion?
Thanks.
Rudy
I would recommend having your carb rebuilt by a reputable person rather than buying a remanufactured carb. I had one and they just don't have the performance that a rebuilt original does.
Part of the problem is that they are made for many vehicles so right off the bat they are full of compromises.
Second, you should read Lars, tech papers on these carbs and all the bad things that are done to them by the remanufacturers. I even saw a reference to carbs rebuilt by Holley that had problems because of what was done to their air passages and such during the remanufacturing process.
I purchased an original carb and had Lars rebuild it and what a difference it makes on my 72 454.
Unfortunately, I was never able to locate or afford a carb of the correct year but Lars suggested that a 73 454 carb would be an excellent candidate to rebuild as they are good performers.
An automatic carb will work just fine on a 4 speed but you would need the extra linkage to go the other way.
