Default Oil Pan Clearance???

1979 small block

How much clearance should be between the Oil Pan and the hydralic steering cylinder?

Previous Owner installed a chrome aftermarket pan on my 79. Not sure if it's designed for a Vette or not? It rubs on the hydralic steering cylinder when you turn the wheels. Not enough to effect steering, but it is wearing on the pan. I'm afraid it will rub through eventually.

Anybody out there with a stock pan can tell me how much space between your pan and steering cylinder?

Also, I've heard that chrome pans are bad because they hold heat more than painted. Any truth to this?

Make sure its not the "cylinder" being too close to the pan.The draglink could have been bent or someone put on a pitman arm from non-power steering or the frame under the drivers side mount is bending.

You know...I changed the idler arm this spring as the old one was worn. I never paid attention to the pan at that time. I wonder if my idler arm is wrong then? Corvette Central only listed one part number. It looked like the old one.

Mine shows 1" of clearance on my '76. Just past the sump, the pan is about 2" higher than the bottom of the sump. Just before the steering cylinder, the pan jogs up another inch to clear the cylinder.

Thanks guys.
That last pic really helps.
My aftermarket chrome pan has no relief in that area.
Well it didn't originally, but now does!

Guess I'll be on the lookout for a stock pan or deep sump.

I have a stock 80 L82 pan you can have for the cost of shipping if you need it. Not perfect but didnt leak and should fit your requirements.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.

Any idea out there on the benefits of a deep sump?
More volume and better cooling I'd assume?

Do you have to replace the oil pump or pickup with a deep pan?

Not sure how the L82 pan stacks up to the L48 or others, maybe the baffle. I replaced mine with a like replacement and a high volume pump when I built my stroker. I also have the L82 oil pump and pick up I can throw in if you can use it. Seemed to be in good working order when I cleaned it but went with a new melling anyway.
