I just did mine last night, for the fourth time in 5 years. Its a breeze on a non AC vette. But as cold as it was I would have paid you the 50.

Hello BLT-71. Just wondering if you had to remove your dash to replace the heater core? Or could your remove/replace thru the engine compartment? My vette is a 1972 all stock 350 non AC with a 4 speed.
Also, why so many heater core replaces in such a short time?
Thanks and have a happy new year!

Try one with A/C and tell me how easy it is...It is one of the worst fixes on these cars by FAR

My opinion is that heater cores burst because the thermostat is closing and causing too much back pressure...I have never had a heater core go bad on me, and I believe it's because I don't use a thermostat. I understand that there are some thermostats that have a hole drilled in them to reduce the pressure buildup, but I've never tried them.

Rockn-roll
Where does the hole get drilled in the thermostat if I wanted to try this trick that you mentioned?
Thanks and Happy New Year

Well I go both ways, so to speak. I still pull the dash and do most of the work that way but when I put in back in I pull the engine section to clear the tubes. It is just too tight to do it all from the engine side. And besides I needed to do a few thing under the dash.
I have been in there so many times I did it in less than an hour total time. The cold inspired me to hurry.
Me and a couple other vette buddies found that the GM replacements fail rather quickly, 1-2 year tops. The after market like Auto Zone last a bit longer either way I have replaced too many. It is scary to think my original was in there for many years.

Yeah, the GM cores seem to have a tendency to leak quickly. He!!, I've seen some that leaked before they were ever installed. From now on I'll have every new core pressure checked before it ever gets installed.

I've helped a buddy with an AC car and it multiples all problems by three. More ducts bigger cases etc. I don't envy you.
But now we are ready for the chill.

I personally think the factory started with the heater core and then added the rest of the car...... AND I hope I never have to do it again.

KrAzYSnIpEr-

How much of the interior did you have to remove to do this job? Does the dash have to come out or just the console and ductwork? I know different years require different procedures and am preparing for this inevitable job on my 79 with Air. Thanks in advance for any heads up.
