generator light
Generator light has come on. The voltmeter gauge is above 13 amps. I have check the alternator belts and they are tight. Does this mean that my alternator is going bad, or could there be another reasons for this light to come on?

Check the GM service manual. It sounds like you have a problem in the alternator, or like mine when someone ripped the wire out. I believe if you ground one of the wires on the plug in connection to the alternator, the light should come on while the engine is not running. I think its wire number 1.

Find someone with a multimeter (some parts stores can do this) You need to get a voltage reading, when idling, off the red wire on the back of the alternator to ground. A good number would be 13.0-14.5 volts. This would tell you that the alternator is putting out voltage greater than the 12 volts to charge the battery and run your electrical system. If the voltage matches to what your voltage gauge reads, (or close)then you have another problemm and can look elsewhere.
