We just dropped a new crate motor in our 1979 corvette and almost have everything ready to run save for one small problem...the side tubes. I have a set of hooker sidepipes and the headers fit up great, but the side tubes (which only have one tab on them, in the rear), are about an inch and a half off lining up with the factory hole on the BOTTOM of the frame rail. Any suggestions? Do I tap a whole and then thread a bolt into the frame or is there another option?
Again there is only one tab on the side pipes, the rear one, and it has been bent down as to mount to the bottom of the frame. Thanks.
That sounds wierd, there should be two tabs on each pipe and they bolt to the side of the frame. After you remove the rocker panel there are slotted holes in the frame.
I realize that they came that way from the factory, however i bought these pipes off of a guy at a swap meet. He had them on his race car and for ease of mounting the tab was bent down so it will mount underneath the car. I just saw a set on ebay from Kustom Headers that had a similar one tab mounting system, though we may end up welding a tab back where it is broken off once we get the pipes mounted on the car.
Weld another mount on the pipe for support,Then I recomend welding the brackets to the frame drilling and tapping on a curved rail is not easy and you really don't have the thickness for treads. I welded mine and have no problems.
P.S.
I allso fabricated my own brackets so that they would fit the rail, if you need pic.s E mail me
