Default grinding going into reverse

I have a '69 L46 / 4-speed coupe that grinds whenever I try to shift into reverse. I have taken to shutting the car off; putting the car in reverse and starting the car back up when I need to back into a spot.
When I first bought the car; about two years ago, I took it to Conte's in Vineland and I seem to recall them telling me about an adjustment that the car needed for reverse. At the time I don't remember having a problem but, now it's embarassing.
Is there an adjustment that can be made to ease getting the car into reverse or am I dreaming? I am hoping that I don't need to have the transmission rebuilt or something.

The Muncie 4 speeds I have had I always moved the shifter thru the gears, while stopped of curse, before putting it into reverse and never had a problem. But check with Paul:

I agree - reverse is non synchronized. By putting the trans into first then shifting to reverse you can avoid the grind.

Sometimes an adjustment to the clutch will help with this problem. It may not be fully engaged.

Putting into second clears the mucie to go into reverse with no grind as well

However, if the clutch is dragging, it will grind again. The way to tell is (while stopped with the engine running):
1. Depress clutch pedal, shift to first or second (which uses the synchronizer to stop the rotation of the disk)
2. Move shifter to neutral and wait for a count of 3
3. And then move the shifter into reverse.
If it grinds now, the clutch is dragging and must be adjusted to get more throw (less freeplay).

However, if the freeplay is correct or on the smallish side (less than 1 inch), the throwout bearing is probably installed incorrectly with the clutch fork is not placed correctly in the groove in the TO bearing. It is extremely important to ensure that the clip is positioned INSIDE the groove of the throw out bearing. The following url shows a good picture of the correct installation:

http://www.camaros.net/forums/showth...w+bearing+fork

If the clip is on top of the aft flange of the TO bearing, you will have problems.

Hope this helps!

Use this SPIN DOWN test out of the Corvette book.Sounds like you have some clutch disengagement issues.
