Default Urethane bumper question

Hello all. On an earlier post I asked about repairing the bumper covers on a 74' I just purchased. Most said trash them and you were right. On the road over the weekend the bottom half of the rear was lost. I have ordered a front and rear fiberglass from Mid America Motorworks and now have the question. What advice do you have for the installation and can I reuse the original retainers, or buy new ones? They offer original style and a kit of stainless clips. Is it better to repaint them on or off the car. Thanks in advance for any comments. Erv in Cincinnati.

Glad to hear you have trashed them, I attached mine with 10mm stainless bolts, you do not need a fitting kit with fibreglass bumpers. I painted mine off the car but they will never really colour match the body. You will need to spend some time getting the bumpers to fit correctly, don't rush it. I have a 74 and have done both ends, good luck.

Some time!!!!!!....it could be ages....there can be a lot of work adjusting to fit.....the 74 is notoriously variable.....getting smooth join lines is really a fiddle!...it is easier to paint on the car once installed.....john

i say if youre going to do it...do it right...you can get the retainers from Baers if your old ones get twisted or are rusted out...and reattach the new bumpers the way the factory did!

this will insure a snug fit with no gaps and you wont worry about the fiberglass cracking later on...

it takes a little more time....but is well worth it...

some pics of my rear bumper cover...

I've done the front on two 73's (same as 74). I've replaced with the origianl GM urethane (still available) and the "Flex-Fit" fiberglass. The urethane was 10x easier to fit up.

Just wondering.....
Will a 74-75 rear bumper bolt up to a 77-79 body?
I'd like to shave the rear bumperettes from my 79. That earley style looks so smooth!

I cant imagine why a 74 wouldnt bolt up thru 82 - i see guys all the time that have 82 rear bumper covers on their 74's....

problem is...74 urethane bumpers are scarcer than hens teeth...so youd have to go fiberglass....which means a lot of fitting...and painting prob....

Flex fit worked great for me, best of both worlds. I painted mine off the car. Do all your fitting and aligning before you paint them. I liked the full length retainer bars. I used some windshield putty to hold them to the backside of the bumper while i fitted it up that way i was able to do it myself. A helper would have been nice. I only bought the retainers I needed. 2 of mine broke when taking it apart but the others weren't rusted and came apart easy.
I'm in Cinci too so let me know if you need some help.
