Default When do you shift your Bigblock??

Thats right I just got it fixed and I am already talking about going fast....

When you get on your Bigblock what are your rpm shift points? I have a SCAT9000 cross drilled crank, 3\8 rods with ARP bolts. Just wondering what my safe limits are for shifting ......

Wade....

PS. Finally a post where I am not telling the story of something going wrong!!!!!

When does your cam make peak power. Shift at that point if your bottom end can take it. 3/8 rod bolts, my SB runs 7/16 rod bolts with a forged crank. I would not hesitate to tun it to 7500 rpm but my cam and heads are done at 6500 rpm. I have bounced it off the rev limiter, 7000 rpm many times.

Glad to hear the problems have been worked out.

Wade, be nice to that engine for some 500 miles, you can take it up for a few blasts, but WOT power shifts I would shy away from....stop at some 5000 rpm's for now.....

let everyone in there get together to see who is what and how they going to occupy the dormitory and get along.....

after that and everyone seems happy, you can go for it....

I"m not saying to baby hell out of it, but to take it out and power shift a bran new engine at 6500 IMO is asking for it.....

My last engine, basically a stout 454 got shifted at anywhere from 6500-7400.

My 555 will see shift points of 7500-8200+

In a drag race type environment, it isnt a big deal. Your rpms arent high enough for long enough to be a problem.
I wouldnt go oval track racing & try to hold 6500 for long periods of time, but for short blasts you will be fine

Well...I like it when she SCREAMS!!!

I used to have a shift light that came on at 6800 to let me know when I went past it..factory tach isn't too accurate. I unplugged it because it annoyed me! Never seemed to go off!

Same with rev limiter....took it off....just gets in the way!

I cross line at 7400-7500 rpm.

My old 427 with 3/8" rods was shifted from 6500-7500 depending on heads I had on it at the time. It's still together after 20+ years of abuse!

Great info and advice guys! I definately will be taking it easy for the first 500. I just wanted to get a base line of what is abuse and what is babying. I have a 6500 rev chip in the msd box and my Autometer tach has the shift light set at 4k.

Thanks
Wade

Like a few have already asked.....what does your cam and intake rate for peak RPM? Sure the bottom end may twist just fine to 7500 but that will not do a bit of good if the engine is done at 6500.

Hook up a vacum gauge and make some blasts, note where your rpms are when your vacum gauge hits 0 or just look at the cam and intake specs and go drive the car, you can tell when it does not pull any more and startes to nose over.

I think when 427Hotrod and I were talking about this cam it was around a 2500 to 6800 rpm range.

Jim, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

The Chevy power book lists save red lines for drag race and road race. I beleive it is 7,600 for L-88 bottom ends in drags racing. I have 7/16 rods, forged crank and pistons. In normal driving I see 5,500 but in a drag race I'll see 6,800 - 7,200. The sound is insane!

As someone else noted the factory tachs are wrong and only get more wrong as you rev them. Put a chip in the box and forget about it.
