Default Wire routing?

I recently purchased a 70 and was wondering if there is supposed to be any type of guard on the wires running from the firewall down to the starter? Bubba has put mine in what looks like some heater hose. Isn't there supposed to be a metal tube that is held by the transmission bolts? If not, how is this cable supposed to be supported and routed? Thanks for your help, this is my first older C3 so I am learning.

No guards, on my 71' there is a clip on the starter solenoid and one on the firewall to hold the harness away from things that get hot.

There is a clip riveted to the upper corner of the 'toe board' near the trans. tunnel that holds the harness away from the back of the block until the the harness is low enough to start forward towards the starter and the clip on the solenoid that Duke mentioned. The 'hot' lead from the battery goes through this clip, too. The vertical ignition shield also helps hold the harness against the firewall, but many cars don't have that shield installed.
Regards,
Alan

I bought some heat sleeve type sheilding from Summit Racing. Put the wires inside of that and have never had an issue in 10 years.
