I have been having problems with my 700R-4 not Shifting, and I am hoping it is the T.V. cable. The T.V. cable almost seems too short to allow WOT. Also, I have read a few things about people having to get a bracket or modify their linkage when using a Holley Carburetor with a 700R-4 transmission. I believe the bracket is called a kickdown bracket. I had a local shop in town install my 383 stroker and carburetor, and I am not sure if they installed the T.V cable correctly onto the carburetor or if that bracket is needed. Can anyone tell me if the geometry of my T.V. cable is correct or not, or if a bracket is needed. I hope the picture is clear enough, let me know if you need a better picture. The Carburetor is a Holley 650 CFM SpreadBore I believe. List # 80555-1. Thank You,
Nathan

I'm in the proces of installing a 700R4 from BTO
the sent me a kit that is designed for my 650 Demon
I know the cable should be straight you may want
to check out thier site or get a universal set up from
your local parts store hope this helps
The TV cable is adjusted by holding the throttle wide open and pushing in on the button on the side of the cable just behind the bracket.
The cable is spring loaded and that will take up the slack in the cable.
If there is still slack after performing this procedure you may need to look into relocating the bracket.

I thought that to adjust a T.V. cable on a 700R4 you had to press metal lock tab, move the slider all the way back, release the lock tab, and then move the throttle to WOT. Can anyone confirm this please?

This is the correct procedure if you're using the GM type self adjusting cable. If the geometry is off though, you won't have a correct setting at idle and just off idle. The only way to know for sure if your adjustment is correct is to check the operating pressure with a gauge.
Do you happen to know if checking the pressure with a gauge is a simple prcedure that does not require any disassembly of the transmission or any other parts of the car? I know it can be pretty tight under these Corvettes.

I stand corrected. I haven't had to do this procedure since 1992. Serves me right for trying to respond from memory.
No worries, I don't think either adjustment is working for me anyhow. After I press the tab and move the slider back, I then rotate the throttle to WOT, but the slider doesn't move back out at all. This is really frsutrating and I am ready to just give up on this transmission and wait until I can put a new one in. Now not only does the T.V. cable not self adjust, and not shift until 4200 RPM's, but whenever I shift into reverse or into drive it acts like it is going to die. This is such a headache.
Nathan....the solution is to buy the correct 700R4 geometry bracket for your Holley carb. This will bolt on to the "factory" linkage bracket to give you the correct geometry (or pull) that the 700R4 TV plunger requires. Depending on which TV cable you bought you might need to upgrade it too. The different vendors sell these brackets for the different carbs out there. Try www.phoenixtrans.com/html/tvcablekits.html to see what I'm talking about. You must have a geometry correction bracket .....you will never get it adjusted correctly without it. The kit I mentioned (in the link) is complete and a good investment as driving with it way out of adjustment will cause transmission failure very quickly.
Please remember that there are two parts to the solution. #1 is to install the geometry correction bracket to the stock linkage and then #2 is to adjust the cable correctly.
If I am reading your description correctly the reason you can't adjust cable is you are doing it wrong.
Lift black tab on cable behind bracket and then open carb to WOT......
push tab back towards cable while holding carb wide open......that should be the proper adjustment.

Not hard at all, but you need the correct fitting and hose. There are test ports on the side of the transmission that the gauge taps ito. The test is run with the car rolling so you need a hose long enough to put the gauge in the car. I know my Rent All has one.
Thank You Kens80V, I have been looking for that bracket for about a week now to no avail. I called them up and they said the bracket ought to solve my geometry problems. The only thing I could find was the full T.V. cable system for like $149.99. The stock T.V. cable system is still on the car, and I just needed the bracket.
CA-Legal-Vette thanks, I will go out and get what I need to test the pressure as soon as I get the bracket. You don't happen to know a good website that would show exactly how to do this would you?
BHRIG - Are you sure you are talking about a 700R-4. I don't think that is the correct procedure. Can anyone verify this please?
The geometry bracket is also available at Jegs and Summit. Your local transmission shops can order them too.
Summit #SUM-700202 (cheapest) or TCI-376715
Jegs #890-376715
