Just finished "fixing" the operation of the wiper door. New actuator, wiper valve, soleniod behind tach. Checked all the routing of the hoses and connections. Had a bad relay on the dash panel switch, replaced. Everything works great! The only problem now is that sometimes, yes only sometimes, the wiper door opens when I start it up, then as vacuum builds, it closes.
I've been pulling my hair(and credit card) out getting this working! I can't find any leaks and the system is holding vaccum.
Any Idea's would be helpful.
Thanks
Hi,
Does the length of time the car has been sitting seem to have an effect on whether the door opens or not? Is it just the wiper door and not the headlight doors?
Regards,
Alan
How old are the hoses...I had the same problems, but my fix was a new set of vacuum hoses from Doc Rebuild and my wiper door stays closed only when needed. Good luck !!!

Check valve is new, hoses are relatively new. Not sure of the length of time it's been sitting yet, as I just finished it up yesterday. Started it up last night and it just barely opened, then closed again. I've checked for leaks too. If that's as bad as it is, I'll just live with it I guess.
To make sure the new relay is good--with the engine running pinch the small hose going to the wiper door relay about 3" from where it connects to the relay and wait for about 30 seconds....if the door pops up the diaphragm on top of the relay is bad.

Bench tested it before I put it in.
I'm going to pull the Check Valve out tonight and test it. Perhaps it's got a pc. of dirt stuck in it....

Could be but you can do the pinch test with it also...just pinch between it and the manifold and see if that fixes the problem if it doesnt then its elswhere.
The vacuum relay's no-control-vacuum-applied position is "open the door". If the control-system is not vacuum-tight air leaks in, the vacuum relay relaxes to the open-the-door position, and on start-up the door starts to open before the relay gets enough vacuum to be moved back to the "close-the-door" position. So the door starts open and then closes.
The vacuum system has ONE check-valve, and vacuum goes all over the place. A slow leak anywhere will cause the problem you're seeing.
I built a vacuum supply from a propane tank (new!) and an electric vacuum pump and started testing. I was amazed at how many things (including a new wiper-door actuator) were leaking!
Good luck!
