A friend of mine asked me this and I did not know. He has a 67 427 with side pipes and the stock covers. The motor is a 550 hp motor on thedyno. He is currently running manifolds and the stock side pipe exhaust. He is looking to go headers and run bigger mufflers in the stock covers. he wants the stock look. The exhaust is chocking the car now and he wants it to breathe better. Is there a larger or better muffler that will fit in the stock covers. Slight modification to the cover is not a problem he just wants the stock look.

Re: Side pipe question (Gordonm)
I don’t see your standard long tube header making this an easy job. If he has the money it would be pretty trick if he had custom headers built that end just short of the front wheels. He could then install a low restriction collector baffle, which you see in many sidepipe headers. Have a short 3" collector pipe turn the corner to the sidepipe covers. From there run a series of 4” OD race mufflers to a short section of 3” pipe before exiting in the stock location. I’m not sure how much room he will have with those covers, but I have pondered this very setup on my car with ’69 sidepipe covers and it will work.
