anyway to tighten up the mirrors? I have a 75 t-top. I have had the top molding off, but does not appear anyway to tighten ball socket on rearview. also the side mirrors ball socket loose as well, when I hit 70 the mirrors sort of folder down. Do I just have to go new? and if so anyone offer a preference on vendors and quality, there are so many to choose from.
Mine are the same way, and buying new ones doesn't always solve the problem. Many here on the forum have complained that the replacements were barely better than the old ones.
There was a post a long time ago (years) that had a fix for the existing mirrors. It involved soaking the mirror in gasoline overnight, which released the glass. Then the riveted/screwed in (can't remember which) strap was removed and a nylon washer installed on the pivot ball under the strap to tighten it up. re-attach the strap and glue the glass back in and your done.
I keep putting this off, and I haven't figured out a safe way to soak the mirror, but it's on my list!
It's a common problem, it doesn't matter if they're GM, us repros or the taiwan ones. The original ones suffered this problem, the US repros are made by Paragon from original GM modes, and have had this problem and the overseas ones sold by alot of vendors ($45.00 to 59.00 w/mount) haven't been around long enough to know if they're better.
If you belong to the NCRS, the current issue has an article about how to take these apart and tightening them up.
I was at Thunderbolt raceway, the new road course in NJ today for the vintage race. I had to laugh at all the VetTe racing that had original type mirrors. They all had "racers tape" on the mirrors to hold them in position!
Super glue fixes side mirrors. Just put a little on the ball and move the mirror all around before it hardens. Get in the car, shut the door and move it into position and get out of the car without opening or closing the door, bumping or jarring the mirror.

Just fixed my inside rearview mirror on my 71 today. What I did was to take out the little plate that holds the ball socket in place and put it in a vise to flatten it slightly. Now when I reinstalled the two little fingers into the bracket in the headpiece there is a little gap that the screw must now compress. Doesn't take much flattening to give more grip. Do not try to flatten the ball socket portion of the clamp, just the overall curvature of the clamp.
