I have a 75 L48. In the engine compartment on the passenger side on the firewall there is something that looks like a relay. It has a rubber button and the label next to it says "Start". What is it? Is it some way to start\turnover the motor while under the hood. At any rate I can't get it to do anything and I can't find any info on it.
i have a 75 also and have the exact same relay. I was told it was a remote start switch, but it doesnt work. Same person said for it to work the car had to be in neutral with the e brake on, but ive never tried.
Surely someone on here has the reason for it being there.
It's part of the seat belt interlock system. I thought it was a 74 only item but I guess the safety ***** held on to it until 75.
From the GM Manual
"the bypass relay on the firewall permits starting the car by bypassing the interlock relay in the event of system failure. To activate the relay, turn the ignition key to on. Then, open the hood and press and release the bypass relay button. THE OVERRIDE MECHANISM WILL BE DAMAGED IF THE BUTTON IS HELD IN THE DEPRESSED POSITION. The engine may then be started by turning the ignition key to start. The relay will remain engaged until the ignition key is turned to OFF or LOCK".
Vettfixr's right, in 1974 the Fed's decided we shouldn't be able to start our cars without buckling the seat belts. The system wasn't great and the switch under the hood was there to over ride the system if (when) it failed. So many people had trouble with it and/or just dissabled it that the feds repealed the law for 1975. I think that 75's built in 1974 were still subject to the seat belt interlock requirement. The repeal took effect around Jan. 75,
so most 75's shouldn't have this switch.

Your right it's a reset relay. I had it on my 74 but I have a late 75 and it's not there
Yeah...I found it last night in a wiring diagram. It is called the "Starter Interlock Override Relay". Not sure what it has to do with the seat belts as my wiring diagram didn't show anything related to the seat belts......although maybe I just missed that. Thanks for the help.
