there's another thread now about changing the oil pan on a sb. i didn't want to hijack, so-i remember reading about two different thicknesses of gaskets. am i loosing my mind or are there? (feel free to answer both questions) if so, how do you determine which to use?

Yes. The front where the pan mates to the timing chain cover is much thicker on one, but I can't remember the changeover year. If you get the 4 piece design you will get both the thin and thick segment.

I opted for the Fel-Pro one-piece (blue) seal and never had another problem with oil leaks. Before, I'd keep dropping the sections of the 4-piece gasket. Now, with the blue 4-corner screw-in retainers that hold the gasket in place, I am able to hange the gasket and slide the pan over the retainers and start a couple key pan bolts before removing the retainers (when you slip the pan over them, the retainers compress and keep the pan in place while you start the bolts... then you just un-screw the retainers). Makes the change an easy one. And, with the one-piece you cannot overtorque and mash the gaskets like you could before (but still need to use common sense when snugging the oil pan bolts of course).

I'm running a FelPro 1 piece and I have had leaks, eventhough I torqued it in the proper sequence. This is probably because I have a stroker clearanced pan and it only has half the bolt holes that a stock pan does. Point in case, it never hurts to use RTV. Silicone seals flippin everything.

Measure the radius at the front of the pan you want to use. If you have 2.25" you want a '74 and earlier gasket. If you measure 2.375" you need the '75 and up gasket. Most all service replacement pans regardless of the year of the original engine application will have the '75 and up gasket design.
