Default Flywheel size

I will be installing a 383 stroker wiht at TKO 600 in my 64. What determines the flywheel size I should use? 153tooth or 168tooth?

Flywheel size is determined by bellhousing. Do you really have a 64? I have no idea what bellhousing a 64 uses but I think the small blocks up through 68 used the 153 tooth 12 3/4" flywheel with 10.4" clutch. The normal bellhousing with the small clutch was the 403 but don't know about C2's. In 69, most Vettes went to the 621 bellhousing, 168 tooth 14" flywheel and 11" clutch. Most 383 (400) flywheels I would think are the larger 168 tooth so you will need a 621 or equivalent bellhousing.

You will probably need a different bellhousing for an 11 inch clutch (168 tooth flywheel).

If your 383 requires an non-neutral balance flywheel, there are 153 tooth flywheels made with that balance - I have had a good 20 lb steel flywheel from McLeod.

Flywheel tooth count: 153; diameter: 14 inch.

Flywheel tooth count: 168; diameter: 12.88 inch.

I believe it's 168 tooth equals 14inch dia.

153 tooth equals 12.88inch dia.

also check the bolt holes on the block where the starter mounts, to verify it has bolt holes tapped to accommodate starters used for 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. an oem (diagonal mount) starter designed for a 168 tooth flywheel will not work with a smaller dia. flywheel and vice versa. I believe there are aftermarket starters which will work both.

Thanks for the info. I will check the bellhousing size and bolt holes on the block.

'63 Corvette has a one year only setup on the bellhousing/front bearing retainer area so watch out for that. The '64 and up SBC C2 will be for the 10.5" clutch setup that uses the 153 tooth flywheel. Those are all 327's and none of them ever had a 11" clutch with the 168 tooth flywheel from the factory.

Thanks Mark. I think I will go with the 153. I was also told if I stay with the 153 and high torque starter I will have more room for headers.

Oops, I did type it backwards.

The small diameter is also sometimes referred to as 12.75 inches, but my GM book says 12.88, the difference probably having to do with the mean tooth diameter versus the overall diameter.

Thanks for catching my typo.
